Natural DIY Christmas table décor can be simple, elegant, and even FREE! With all of the expenses that come along with the holidays, decorating your Christmas table doesn’t have to be one of them. If you’re willing to get creative, possibly a little dirty, and flex your DIY muscles, you can save a lot of money on decorations while beautifying your home with the natural colors of the season. (For a detailed list of everything you see and where I got it from, see the bottom of this post).
First Things First: Start With Staple Pieces
The key to decorating on a budget is having neutral, staple decor pieces that can be used and reused every season. White napkins for example can work well with any occasion and can be dressed up or down with napkin rings, or in this case, a branch of holly. Neutral plates with simple patterns are also a great idea. You can always add in the natural remnants of each season, and you’ll spend less this way.
Get A Little Dirty
Since I wanted a natural look, I literally just walked outside with scissors and started clipping away. After gathering a few magnolia leaves, holly branches, and reusing pinecones from fall, my natural table runner was basically set. I did add some rosemary from a bouquet I bought from Publix, and a few pieces of cedar that I found super cheap at a thrift store. You never know what you’ll find at thrift stores! Bonus: Cedar and Rosemary add a great winter scent. That’s the beauty of using natural décor, you get the smells and textures of the season too, and not just the look. If your yard doesn’t give you access to the wintery green plants you want, try stopping buy a nursery and asking for scraps. You’ll be surprised at the many decor options nature gives when you really start looking.
Simple Place Settings
It doesn’t take much to make a place setting unique. This rosemary wreath was super easy to make. Just a little floral wire to hold it together and you’re good to go. If you want to hide the green wire, just add a place card like so.
Think Vertically Too
We often stick to horizontal (table) decorating and forget about vertical spaces like light fixtures and walls. Decorating light fixtures or hanging something from the ceiling can add a lot of interest to your dining table. Carrying the natural décor from your table to the wall can also help unify the space. Although I wanted natural, I also wanted a little sparkle for Christmas. Adding a metal tone (gold, silver, brass) is a great way to blend rustic and elegant together. I hope this gave you some great ideas on how to decorate naturally, elegantly, and on the cheap!
