So you’ve finally done it. You scheduled family pictures. You found a photographer you love and wont leave you penniless. You found a day that works for everyone’s crazy schedule, and you’ve tirelessly searched for outfits that look great together. I recently went through each of these steps and thought I’d share a few tips that I found helpful or completely forgot and will be sure to do next time around.
Outfits: Think Complimentary Not Identical
When choosing what your family will wear for pictures try think more in terms of complimentary colors and patterns and less about everything matching. Each person is unique and although you don’t want the clothes to take the spotlight, you also don’t want to look like you’re all wearing uniforms. Pick 3 to 5 colors and intermingle. You may also want to think of what other colors will be in your photos. I knew we would have a lot of natural greenery and maybe some blue sky in our locations so I tried to stay away from dark, contrasting colors. It all depends on the look you want, and personal style.
Don’t Forget about the Elements
Think about where your pictures will be taken and what conditions are like. If you’re in Fl. for example, you will probably need bug spray, and depending on time of day, sunscreen. Just make sure you rub it in well:) Your location and weather conditions should also be considered when picking out your clothes and hairstyle. My hair has an annoying way of getting in my face, and if there is the slightest bit of wind, it gets angry. So a boho-inspired, pulled back look worked great. I also knew I wanted something sleeveless to help with the heat. This Boho blush dress is a new favorite and under $30 from Target.
Don’t forget the treats
There once was a time when I said I wouldn’t bribe my kids for doing simple things like listening…then I had kids. Now I don’t view it as much as bribing as I do rewarding them for certain behavior. So for this round of photos my little guy was promised a lollipop for complying with sweet smiles for 2 hours. Well deserved, if you ask me. And maybe reward yourself, with say, a glass of wine for putting this whole thing together. It was no small task. After all was said and done, I couldn’t be happier with these precious moments that have been frozen in time, for me to cherish the rest of my life. Thank you Carissa from Graceful Light Photography for capturing these lovely images. You made the process enjoyable and the images beautiful.
These are great tips and I LOVE how your photos turned out! Such a beautiful family.
