Luli’s Cupcakes

One thing I love about small towns is walking into local businesses and being treated more like a friend than a stranger. I recently had this experience when visiting Lela, who owns and runs Luli’s in Downtown St. Augustine. She asked if I would review a few of her scrumptious desserts, and share my thoughts. Of course I said yes. I mean, who says no to cupcakes?

A review of desserts would normally be hard for me to do, not because I don’t love them, but because I’m sensitive to dairy. Insert Luli’s amazing selection of gluten free, dairy free, and vegan desserts. Typically speaking, when you are lucky enough to find a bakery with a dessert selection for those with sensitivities, selection is usually scarce. This was definitely not the case at Luli’s.

It was almost too hard to choose! But staying true to my chocolate loving self, I went with chocolate on chocolate. I also never turn down a good cup of coffee, and Luli’s serves the delicious, locally roasted Old City Brew coffee. A match made in dessert heaven.

Guys, this cupcake was absolutely delicious! It reminded me of those molten lava cakes that are slightly crisp on the outside and  full of melted, chocolaty goodness on the inside. Now,  I’m going to keep it real with you. I can typically tell when a dessert is dairy free/gluten free and I was expecting it to be good, for that type of cupcake. I was completely underestimating this cupcake. Honestly, it was the best chocolate cupcake I’ve ever had (regular, dairy/gluten filled cupcakes included). It was that good.

If you aren’t a cupcake person, Luli’s has you covered. They also have brownies, cookies, and other treats that are perfectly suited for those who avoid certain ingredients. Luli’s also just started serving savory options. So if you’re in the mood for a pressed grilled cheese served on Ezekiel bread with tomato soup, stop by. Just make sure you save room for dessert. Luli’s also takes orders for birthdays and other special events and can even ship some of their goodness right to your door!

Now under new ownership, Luli’s has a new look and feel inside and out, as well as more tasty treats to try.

They will be celebrating their Grand Reopening May 28th from 5-8pm with goodies (cupcake shooters and wine), giveaways (free T-shirt and cupcakes), and lots of fun. A perfect time to say hello and find a new favorite in this charming old town.
