DIY Vintage Chalkboard

Once upon a time I really liked this vintage painting. Then we moved, our wall colors changed, and it just wasn’t working in the new space. So I need a way to make it work….

I still loved the frame so I decided to keep it and give it a dose of chalkboard paint!image

Unfortunately I was unable to remove the picture from the frame (that happens a lot with vintage paintings) when in doubt, work around it to avoid damaging the piece. So I bought a foam brush with edges and chalkboard paint. Now I’m going to keep it real with you, this is not a one coat project. It took a good 3 coats (with 30 minutes or so of drying time in between) to cover this old gal. So don’t rush, and maybe paint outside or close to a window to avoid getting high on fumes:)

After a few coats have dried you need to prep your chalkboard, aka rough it up and cover the porous surface. This prevents your first quote or saying from being the only one you’ll ever see! I wanted to make short work of this (not a patient crafter) applying 3 coats + drying time was already pushing it!image So I grabbed one of my son’s pieces of outside chalk and went to town. I covered the piece (rushing because nap time was almost over for my two kiddos), wiped it off and was ready to go! Sort of, still had to write something, make it pretty, and hang it, hah! So here’s the final product! now my dining room has the large chalkboard I’ve been wanting and it only cost a few bucks and some time:)
